2 Peter 3:11–12 (ESV): Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, 12 waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn!
What a great question that must be (and is) answered by every person who has walked across the threshold of repentance and now lives by the spirit.
What sort of person should I be?
This is a block buster set of devotionals that will crush our reliance upon the world we see and thrust all who receive these words, into the realm of the spirit. Which is precisely where God wants you to be. In regard to life in the Holy Spirit, here is what the Bible says regarding our orientation to Him.
1 Corinthians 12:1–3 (ESV): Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed. 2 You know that when you were pagans you were led astray to mute idols, however you were led. 3 Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit.
God does not want you or me to be uninformed. He wants you led and filled with the Holy Spirit. Yes, this passage applies to gifts, but it also applies to life in the Holy Spirit.
My goals are to help you see the futility of this world and continue your journey toward trusting God by waiting and wanting the soon return of Jesus.
2 Timothy 4:8 (ESV): Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.
God wants you home. He wants you to be gathered to Himself. He misses you and desires deeply that you would be out of all this madness that we are facing on earth. You were not made to exist in the same place as sin or the effects of sin and brokenness. He does not want you here one second longer than you have to be.
He deeply desires that you would want that too.
So, in order to get the flame burning brighter for Jesus, I want to put some gas on the fire so that we can be aflame together.
When Peter tells us that all these things are going to be dissolved, what does he mean? Well… he means everything. All matter in this universe is going to be dissolved. And I believe very soon.
As I sit and look outside my window at a mango tree that I have been nursing along for over ten years, wanting and hoping that it would some day have one mango on it, I must realize that it is going away. (The poor tree froze 6 years ago and died to the ground. It was 15 ft tall then. Now it is 20 ft tall and very healthy.)
There is an end to everything that we know here, we who have accepted the gift that Jesus offers will make it through the fire, but everything else will not.
Isn’t that what Peter is trying to impress upon his readers. Isn’t he trying to help them hold onto their earthly attachments loosely? I believe he is.
Let’s buckle up for these devotionals.
Father, we need Your wisdom to traverse through these startling and shocking truths. We are accustomed to believe that everything is going to keep going along as it always has. But You clearly state through Peter and others, that You have an end in sight. At the end You are going to gather us to go home with You. help us to love that day more than anything this world has to offer. Help us to live for that day today. Jesus, you did! You are showing us the way. Thank You!
Blessings,
Pastor D
