Wisdom 1 - Dr. David Speicher

1 Corinthians 1:18-19 For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.”

Read this, it will make a lot of sense. It is encapsulated in this verse. Memorize and speak it out in your day. The word of the cross is the power of God.

What happened at the cross is the beginning of life for all who are willing to understand. Even though we are all born into this world, we are destined for death because we have been born into the sin of this world. Because we are fallen creatures, we carry with us the penalty of being born into fallenness.

Because we are fallen, we are capable of sin. Therefore, each of us has added to the fallenness of the world. Perpetuating from our past and casting the sinful condition into the future. Large or small sin, we have all become the problem with God’s world.

No one on earth, past, present or future can declare personal righteousness because everyone has sinned. The moment we sin we are part of the problem.

Romans 3:22-23 “For there is no distinction: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God…”

Therefore, we carry the penalty that God laid out for all sin and those who propagate it.

Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death…”

It seems harsh, doesn’t it, that God would penalize people who are born into this world with a death sentence?

Imagine a disease like Covid that brought certain death – like the Bubonic plague that ravaged Europe and Asia in 1300. Imagine a husband who contracts the plague and passes it on to his wife who is about to give birth to a child. And passing through the birth canal, the child contracts the disease. The whole family has it and is doomed to die.

Sin is passed on from one to the next – indiscriminate.

All have the condition and there is no hope apart from a miracle cure.

This is what God sees when He looks upon the earth. Except there is more hope for a person to be made well from the plague than a person who has been touched by sin. People lived through the plague. No one has or ever will live through sin.

No matter how good a person is or how hard they try, there is nothing a person can do to rid themselves of the plague.

If you notice the word “perishing” is present in the scripture we are studying this morning. Our author is eluding to the truth that every single person on earth has the sin plague and there is absolutely no hope for them finding a cure on this earth.

Some people don’t even know the condition exists inside of their life. And the author speaks to that very thing. He says that to some people talking about the cure for the sin plague is folly. The cross makes no sense to them, but to those whose who have the ears to hear, who are being saved, the cure is the power to live.

Imagine a plague worse than anything on earth, anything our world has ever seen.

Matthew 10:27-28 What I tell you in the dark, say in the light, and what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops. And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

Jesus says to be more concerned about the sin plague than the physical one. Our world has changed in the last two years as a mighty plague descended upon all of us. We talk more about vaccines and cures today, than in our entire lifetime. A very small percentage of people have died because of Covid, and we are alarmed by the statistics and rightfully so. We do not want to lose our lives, nor do we want anyone losing their life to this horrible disease.

Yet, the mortality rate for sin is 100%.

100%!

The Master knows the cure, the Lord Jesus is the cure, He is the power that saves. And the false claims of this world that there isn’t a sin plague, He confounds and thwarts so that people can know there is a sin plague.

You have a part to play in this massive cosmic endeavor of God.

I know the message of the cross is not folly to you. And for you, that means that wisdom from God has settled into your being. Let’s activate that wisdom form God…shall we?

Father, thank You for Jesus who is power for life. In Him we have eternal life. Through Him we can help the world see that there is a cure for sin. Praise Your Name Lord God! You have made the way for us to be cured from sin!

Blessings,

Pastor D
